Sale to Land Rover completed & to go Cross-Country!

Wednesday, 19 October 2016

Colchester Borough Council has completed the sale with Lookers Land Rover for the sale of land at Axial Way, to facilitate a new, state of the art Land Rover showroom.

The new North Colchester showroom will replace Lookers’ existing facility at Cowdray Avenue to help meet Land Rover’s consistent increase in popularity and demand.

The deal ensures the retention of 51 jobs, with the potential for further skilled employment in the future.

Councillor Mark Cory, Portfolio Holder for Resources said: “It's great news that the deal with Lookers Land Rover has been finalised. This once again shows that Colchester is 'open for business' and offers expanding businesses a place to grow and prosper. Securing Lookers’ future in the borough will protect local jobs and boost the town’s economic development."

“The new facility is further investment in the Council's Northern Gateway project which aims to create one destination for sports and leisure, for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. The Council is becoming more commercial and enterprising in its outlook and this enables us to bring in income to subsidise and protect frontline Council services."

Ewan Dodds, BSC FRICS, CEO at Whybrow, joint selling agents with Newman Commercial stated: “This exciting land sale to Lookers plc for their car showroom franchise adds to the growing pattern of development and investment we have seen in north Colchester in recent years."

“Following the development of the A12 junction and completion of the link road to the town centre, this acquisition follows the earlier sale to Inchcape next door for their VAG showroom. With the proposed development of a major new leisure complex nearby where an application is submitted for a 12 screen cinema, 80 bed hotel, restaurant and active leisure uses, the Northern Gateway is rapidly helping the town to become a real focus for new investment and heralds an exciting time for Colchester as a major regional centre for business.”

Jeremy Newman, Managing Director of Newman Commercial, joint agent with Whybrow commented, “We are delighted to have been able to agree a sale with Lookers on this strategic development site at Colchester`s Northern Gateway and look forward to the opening of their new Land Rover franchise in 2017.”

The new site spans 10,500 square meters and includes a purpose built showroom, workshop, staff and sales areas. The expanded site will also provide a substantial capital receipt for the Borough, and will generate additional business rates. This will help the Council protect its front line services and deliver its strategic aims.
